Please Be Seated

Ever since I was little I've been a wriggle-bum. Squirmy is my middle name. So finding the right chair on any given occasion is of paramount importance to me. Some days I'm fine to stretch out on our long sofa. Other days, I'm happy in our single tub chairs. Then on those times where the infamous Nurse's Back complaint rules my day, I'll drag one of the dining room chairs into the Living Room, as all I want is to be forced to sit bolt upright to read or watch the telly. All of these wonderful room settings please my back, 'cos there's a real variety of chairs to choose from. I'd be a bit like Goldilocks, flitting from chair to chair until I'm able to say 'And this one is just right!'

Chair Love + Thanks

I'm a shocker when it comes to pillows on chairs & sofas. Not only do I want them for the extra pizzaz they add to a room, I need them desperately for behind my back. I drive everyone mad as I flop down in the seat. At least a further 3-5 minutes of wriggling, plumping, fussing, arranging & finally sighing, goes on before I truly settle down. These beautiful chairs come from Pimpernel & Partners in London. Yes, they are a blank canvas sans pillows, but just imagine how they'd look with some beauties of your choice. Their shapes are gorgeous & each tells its own story - so do tell us which shape turns your head & what pillows you'd add to make it truly your own. P.S. Because I love a bedroom chair, the ever-so pretty Capucine has my vote.

The Malplaquet (a gentleman's armchair in the Georgian style)

The Pakefield Wingback (a replica from the first decade of the 20th century capturing a ‘no-nonsense’ simplicity)

The Capucine (named after the similarity of its shape to a nun’s veil)

The Combray (robust & roomy replica of a 19th century French chair, with a chapeau de gendarme shaped back)

The Percy (named after the Pimpernel himself, this 1940s French replica is a low, very comfortable, country chair)

Old Rockers

.....no MOTH doesn't feature here in full Air Guitar mode, so you can relax! Although during Sunday night's Idol episode, a certain un-named person did do a shockingly bad version of Mick doing Jumping Jack Flash when they thought I was out of the room!

Brigette and Robin Buchanan from Odd Limited have turned the humble garden swing into something quite extraordinary. These fully upholstered swinging sofas called Old Rockers, are hung on a frame made of stainless steel & beechwood. The roof and sides are covered in fabrics such as velvet, hopsack, voile, wool twill & canvas. Then you can layer & add accessories such as African Tribal Rugs, Moroccan Kilims, pom-poms, fringing, tassels & wooden ball finials until you can get just the look you want.

With fat upholstered rounded backs, fully padded arms & squishy feather down pillows, comfort is high on the design agenda here. Odd have developed an all-weather cotton canvas material that allows the Old Rocker to be left outside during Summer (although probably designed for temperate English summers, I'm not sure how they'd go in the searing Aussie Summer heat that sucks the air right out of your lungs!). Now which one would you like to Rock On with!

FADED GREEN Old Rocker with Maud velvet inside walls & 3 extra velvet cushions.

WHITE SAIL canvas Old Rocker with Rock loose covers & a selection of Llama wool scatter cushions .

FADED RED Old Rocker with Maud hopsack on the sofa cushions & inside walls. Stripe Dream hopsack and Maud hopsack fabric cover the extra feather cushions.

DREAM ON White Old Rocker with old french linen used on the bolsters & round feather extra cushions. African Tribal Rugs have been used for inside walls.

MAROC Old Rocker in Elephant canvas. The sofa, inside walls, gaiters & bolsters are covered in a soft woven kilim fabric. The fringe is handmade from old sari silk. Large faded old tassels, velvet cushions with pompoms & painted hardwood ball finials complete the story.

FRENCH LINEN White Sail Canvas with old french linen used on the inside walls, with bolsters & round feather extra cushions & ball finials. An African Tribal Rug covers the back of the sofa.

THE CITY Old Rocker sofa in faded red canvas has Baby Elephant canvas roof and outside walls. Feather scatter cushions in Angus woven wool. Ball finials on the roof.

ROCK Old Rocker has white sail water and rot resistant canvas with Odd's Rock woven cotton fabric on all the cushions, inside walls, scatter cushions and spring gaiters.

POOLSIDE Old Rocker in White Sail canvas with extra bolsters and round cushions, ball finials and woven Alpaca Rug.

And when Summer's over why not move the Old Rocker indoors and use it as a 'special' sofa? Odd can supply loose covers in velvets or hopsacks to change from canvas if that's what your Old Rocker came with originally. Add some extra feather filled cushions, string up some fairy lights and the Old Rocker will look fantastic for the winter months. With a fire blazing and fairy lights twinkling, it is the best place for hiding away with a book, although sensibly, fire retardant liner fabric is required when the Swing is used indoors

What Am I?

I have no supporting frame.
I'm shaped by a cover available in a wide range of fabrics & leather.
I'm made with 5 separate chambers containing expanded polystyrene pearls.
Each of my chambers is made with a zip equipped with a safety pocket.
Because of the specific characteristics of the expanded polystyrene, which does not assure a constant density, it is not possible to guarantee that I will have the same volume.
With the daily use, my expanded polystyrene pearls might lose volume.
My original volume can be obtained by adding new expanded polystyrene pearls to one or more chambers.

Although Verzelloni calls me a Divani, it's pretty obvious that I'm the FUNKIEST range of Bean Bags you'll ever see!

Theadora Van Runkle is a Hollywood costume designer (Bonnie & Clyde, The Godfather, The Thomas Crown Affair & many others). She lives in a Californian bungalow in Los Angeles which is constantly evolving. She has gone down the predominantly white decorating route because she says ' My house is now simple & life seems easier & somehow more fulfilling.' If that's the case dear Miss VR, then show me the white paint tin immediately & I'm off painting everything in sight! Interestingly, she's used more than 30 shades of white in her house, mixing a new tint each time something else is painted so her house doesn't look like an all-white wedding cake.

She also painted a set of antique Regency mahogany chairs (as pictured) because she was 'tired of them', although she did admit that some of her friends were staggered - & I'm really not surprised! So cutting to the chase - what do you think of Ms. Van Runkle's decision to give the chairs the white treatment? Is it sacrilege or is it fine - do tell!!
