Veteran South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela took the stage with Grazin' in the Grass a No. 1 international hit in 1968 joined by a new South African star, Lira, who covered the late Miriam Makeba's Pata Pata, another worldwide hit that originated in South Africa. The Black Eyed Peas then took the stage and performed a medley of their hit songs (watch video here). Shakira, sporting animal print, was next with a thrilling rendition of Waka Waka (watch video here), the official World Cup theme song. Alicia Keys followed with a stirring performance (watch video here), which had the audience swaying along with her. The finale of the stadium show featured Sly and the Family Stone singing Everyday People and a fireworks display. South Africa takes on Mexico in the first match of the tournament on Friday morning.
